How virtual consultations work, when they are appropriate, and what to expect from your telehealth appointment.
Telehealth has transformed healthcare delivery, making medical consultations more accessible and convenient than ever before. At Gosnells Family Practice, we're proud to offer telehealth services to our patients.
## What is Telehealth?
Telehealth allows you to consult with your doctor via secure video call or phone consultation, from the comfort of your home or anywhere with internet access. It's not a replacement for in-person care, but rather a valuable additional option for appropriate situations.
## When is Telehealth Appropriate?
Telehealth works well for:
- Follow-up appointments
- Prescription renewals
- Test result discussions
- Mental health consultations
- Management of stable chronic conditions
- Minor illness advice
- Medical certificates for simple conditions
- Referrals and specialist letters
## When You Should Come In Person
Some situations require face-to-face examination:
- New or acute symptoms requiring physical examination
- Procedures or treatments
- Comprehensive health assessments
- Any situation where physical examination is necessary
- Emergency or urgent care needs
## How to Book a Telehealth Appointment
1. Book online or call (08) 6118 2788
2. Specify that you want a telehealth consultation
3. Ensure you have a phone or device with video capability
4. Check your internet connection
5. Be in a private, quiet space for your appointment
## What to Expect During Your Telehealth Visit
Before your appointment:
- Have your Medicare card and any relevant documents ready
- Write down your symptoms or questions
- Have a list of current medications
- Ensure good lighting if using video
During the consultation:
- Your doctor will verify your identity
- Discuss your concerns just as in an in-person visit
- Your doctor may ask you to describe symptoms or show affected areas
- Prescriptions can be sent to your preferred pharmacy
- Referrals can be emailed or sent to specialists
After your appointment:
- You'll receive any prescriptions electronically
- Follow-up can be arranged if needed
- Your notes are recorded in your medical file as usual
## Medicare and Bulk Billing
Telehealth consultations are Medicare-rebated. Many telehealth appointments at Gosnells Family Practice are bulk billed for concession card holders and children under 16.
## Security and Privacy
Our telehealth platform is secure and compliant with Australian privacy laws. Your consultation is confidential, and we use encrypted video technology to protect your personal health information.
## Tips for a Successful Telehealth Visit
- Test your technology beforehand
- Choose a quiet, private location
- Ensure good lighting (face the light source)
- Speak clearly and at a normal pace
- Don't hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear
